Select Subcommittee Announces Roundtable and Hearing on ‘Moving Beyond the Coronavirus Crisis’

Press Release
Public health experts and Biden Administration officials to address current state and ongoing management of coronavirus pandemic

Washington, D.C. (March 14, 2022) – Rep. James E. Clyburn, Chairman of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, today announced two events to be held in March focused on “Moving Beyond the Coronavirus Crisis.”

  • On Wednesday, March 16 at 2:00 p.m. ET, the Chairman will hold a remote roundtable discussion with public health experts.
  • On Wednesday, March 30 at 2:00 p.m. ET, the Chairman will hold a hybrid hearing with Biden Administration officials.

Both events will focus on the Biden Administration’s progress in combating the pandemic and on how their National COVID-19 Preparedness Plan will protect Americans from the virus while minimizing the need for future pandemic-related disruptions.

Nearly two years after the World Health Organizations declared a global pandemic, Americans now have widespread access to highly effective vaccines, therapeutics, tests, and other tools to prevent and protect against the coronavirus.  These tools have helped the United States make significant progress in containing the coronavirus, saving countless lives, reducing the burdens on hospitals around the country, and enabling a robust economic recovery.

Due to the progress made against the coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have been able to relax recommended mitigation measures for the communities in which 98 percent of Americans live.  The Biden Administration also recently unveiled a comprehensive strategy for the next phase of the pandemic response that outlines steps to help the nation stay ahead of the virus and keep Americans safe, while minimizing the need for public health measures like masking and distancing.

D
uring Wednesday’s roundtable, public health experts will provide a contextualized understanding of the current phase of the pandemic—where, according to one of the participants, “pre-pandemic normalcy is possible now that we have the right tools”—the ongoing level of risk posed by the coronavirus, and what must be done to keep Americans safe moving forward.

Later in the month, the Biden Administration officials will address the progress made in combating the coronavirus and explain how the Administration’s National COVID-19 Preparedness Plan will protect against and treat the coronavirus, prepare for new variants, prevent economic and educational shutdowns, and allow the U.S. to continue to lead global vaccination efforts.
